Her latest single “Pretty Girl Rock” is one of many reasons why Keri Hilson will never reach megastardom. I know it sounds harsh, but as far as I’m concerned, she’s the Mya (many of you will probably click her name to see who she is, which kinda proves my point) of today. She doesn’t do anything exceptionally well. She’s pretty, not gorgeous. She can sing, but she can’t sang, and I know sex sells, but she’s attempting to sell music, and if what you’re selling can only be heard, being cute doesn’t help much.
Furthermore, as mentioned in “Girls on Girls”, with women, modesty goes a long way. When women are the ones you are looking to for support, running around talking about how pretty you are is NOT going to cut it. “Pretty” girls don’t need to tell people they’re pretty. So, when anyone blatantly says they’re cute or pretty or a 10, it automatically makes you focus on what’s wrong with her, not what’s right.
Aside from her lack of raw talent, another reason why Keri Hilson will soon become obsolete is because of Beyonce…and Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, and every other chick in the game who has more to offer than just a pretty face. These women are crazy talented, and their music appeals to ALL audiences – men and women, young and old, attractive or unattractive (obviously girls who are not pretty can’t in good conscience sing or even hum “Pretty Girl Rock”).
But, the main reason Hilson’s fame is fleeting is because of iTunes and piracy. This is a modern day one-hit-wonder’s worst nightmare! Gone are the days when you had to buy an entire album just to hear 1 or 2 good songs. These days, we have free, unrestricted access to any and all types of music. We can now listen to any song we want, whenever we want, and as many times as we want without spending a dime. That’s why gimmicks like Keri’s are relatively short-lived. My advice to Keri would be to take some acting classes, start a clothing line, or market her own perfume before the jig is up.
And, for those of you who still don’t know who I’m talking about…
